Local Government through the Power of Technology
What does the Register of Deeds do?
Why is it important to have an experienced professional elected to the office?
Much of the history of the Office related to the preparation of the Deed Books which in the early years were hand copies of deeds, rights of way and easements submitted by attorneys on behalf of their clients. An index was prepared by hand and alphabetized. Typewriters and photographic processes followed in quick succession. Fees and taxes were collected and accounted for first by hand and then by mechanical cash registers and receipt printers.
The Register of Deeds office also issues marriage licenses.
In the last few years much of the work of the Register of Deeds has been taken over by computers. But more can be automated and the historic records themselves turned into content searchable records. So lists that had to be prepared by examining the old records can now be produced for the public if the Registers office moves into second decade of the 21st century with a forward looking professional that Ed Ablard is and this is how six year degree in Regional Economic Development with a focus on Technology from George Mason University fits precisely the requirements.
